Hollywood couple Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have spoken out about their decision to seek therapy after a “tumultuous” start to their marriage.
American actors Bell, 41, and Shepard, 47, wed in 2013 in a low-key ceremony at the Beverly Hills County Clerk’s Office that Bell says cost $147.
The couple spoke openly about their decision to seek therapy on ITV’s This Morning after struggling early in their marriage.
Bell, who started out in comedy The Good Place and voiced Anna in Frozen, said, “I felt very inauthentic pretending it was easy because it’s not that hard.
“We met, we fell in love, we’re both very stubborn people and years one and two were tumultuous and we felt we needed outside opinions.
“We need a bigger toolbox — everyone is born with a tiny toolbox — so we went to therapy and figured out how to disagree, but still love yourself.”
Shepard, who interviewed the Duke of Sussex on his podcast Armchair Expert, revealed that shortly after he first went to therapy as a couple, he and Bell realized the root cause of their relationship difficulties was “embarrassingly simple”.
Speaking to hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Shepard said, “It was embarrassingly simple, like this gentleman listened to us for six minutes and said, ‘Okay, I know exactly what’s going on.’
“You’re an ex-dirtbag. You always think you’re in trouble. You get quiet with depression and when you’re quiet he thinks he’s in trouble and the whole thing explodes.”

The couple, who have worked together on films such as Hit And Run and When In Rome, also revealed they would encourage everyone to seek therapy.
Bell added, “It’s like going to the gym — if you want to change and get a six pack, you have to do the work.
“I personally feel like I’m not at all embarrassed to say I go to therapy, alone or with (Shepard).
“I almost feel like if you’re not in therapy, it’s embarrassing.”
Despite the issues the couple has faced, Shepard revealed that it’s “harmonious” when they work together on set.
“When we do a movie or TV show together or do anything together professionally, we have exactly the same goal, which is rare, and most couples don’t have exactly the same goal or benefit from each other’s genius,” he said.
“So for us it’s great because if we work together, I think, well, that’s right. She is incredibly talented. That will make this day easier.”
