Ukraine: Russian troops occupy Chernobyl and take employees hostage

Kyiv is expected to fall by the end of the week with “enemy sabotage groups” advancing into the Ukrainian capital, according to reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Facebook that he has been targeted as “enemy number one” for Vladimir Putin, who is said to aim to overthrow the country by taking out the head of state.

He said that “enemy sabotage groups” were already in Kyiv and that he had also ordered all men aged 18 to 60 to join the army and banned them from leaving the country.

“According to our information, the enemy has identified me as the number one target. My family is the number two target,” Zelensky said.

“They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state.”

Kyiv could fall into Russian hands by the end of the week, according to reports

He added that “enemy sabotage groups have entered Kyiv.”

It comes after Russian forces invaded Ukraine on Thursday in a large-scale land, sea and air assault, the largest single country offensive in Europe since. from World War II.

In an all-out war, Ukraine lost the strategic nuclear site Chernobyl, where the army had a fierce battle with Russian soldiers.

There was also fighting at Hostomel airport, just outside Kyiv, where Russian paratroopers landed. A Ukrainian official later said the airport had been recaptured, while a senior US defense official said Russian forces were closing in on Kyiv.

Zelensky said that so far 137 civilians and soldiers have been killed with 316 injured and he said he will stay in the capital, where it is believed to be in the bunker.

American intelligence believes that the purpose of the Russian military is to encircle Kyiv and then force the city to surrender and resist it.

Either way capital is expected to drop over the next few days.

A former senior US intelligence officer told Newsweek : “Once the air force and artillery are over and the real ground war begins, I think Kyiv will fall within the next few days.

“The army could last a little bit longer but this won’t last.”

The White House is expressing outrage at “credible reports” from Ukrainian officials that employees at the now-closed Chernobyl nuclear plant have also been held hostage by the Russian military.

Press secretary Jen Psaki said on Thursday that “we condemn it and we demand their release”.

Psaki said the United States has no assessment of the condition of the plant, where radioactive material is still leaking decades after the worst nuclear disaster in history.

However, she said taking hostages could hamper efforts to maintain nuclear facilities and was “extremely alarming and disturbing”.

Psaki spoke after Alyona Shevtsova, an adviser to the Commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, wrote on Facebook that employees at the Chernobyl plant were “taken hostage” when the Russian military seized the facility.
