Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan return to Neighbors in farewell to soap opera

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan return after more than 30 years for the finale of long-running Australian TV soap Neighbors.

The 53-year-old reprise their roles as popular characters Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough.

Neighbors – first aired in 1985 – confirmed on Sunday that Minogue and Donovan will be back on Ramsay Street before the show ceased production in June after being shelved by its broadcaster.

The show’s official Twitter account shared a message from Executive Producer Jason Herbison, saying, “Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbors couple and it wouldn’t feel right to end the show without them.

“We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special role in our series finale.”

A follow-up post continued, “It was an emotional experience for them, for us and I’m sure it will be for our viewers.”

Minogue and Donovan played Scott and Charlene until their departures in 1989 and 1988, respectively.

The pair were the power couple of Ramsay Street and a crowd favorite.

In response to news of her return, Minogue posted what appeared to be a glimpse of a photo Neighbors Scripted on Instagram, with the caption: “Omg !!”

Donovan posted a similar image showing the script from a different angle and captioned it with his co-star’s Instagram handle.

Scott and Charlene’s 1988 wedding episode was seen by almost 20 million viewers in the UK and more than two million viewers in Australia.

The ceremony became one of the most-watched TV moments of the decade.

After it was announced that production of the soap would be halted, Donovan said: “I think it’s sad… but I think it’s time to celebrate Neighbors.”

Minogue – who has had a successful pop career with hits including I should be so happy and Rotate – said she is “forever grateful” for her time on the show as mechanic Charlene.

Donovan also transitioned to a career in music including hits Especially for you – his duet with Minogue.

He has also appeared in musicals, including the lead role Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat In the 1990s.

Neighbors was broadcast in Ireland on RTÉ, while in the UK it has been broadcast on Channel 5 for more than a decade, having previously broadcast on the BBC.

Earlier this year, Channel 5 announced it was dropping the show from its plans.

This decision left the producers with a funding gap as the UK network was a key broadcast partner in the series.

Producers later said they were “so sorry” but had “no choice but to sit out the show.”

Donovan’s father Terence previously starred in the show as Doug Willis and his daughter Jemma is part of the current cast and plays Harlow Robinson.

The program has also launched the careers of Hollywood stars Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth and Guy Pearce, and singers Natalie Imbruglia and Delta Goodrem.
