Mikaela Shiffrin came to this Olympics with the goal of competing in five events. She did so, though she fell short of her goal, failing to finish three races and finishing ninth and 18th in the other two.
She’s competing in her sixth race on Saturday: a mixed team event, the only mixed-sex sledding event at the Winter Olympics. This is the second time the event has been held at an Olympics.
“Why do I keep coming back? Gosh knows that lately it’s hurt more than it feels good, “she say on Twitter after failing to complete his last personal event. “I’m back because the first 9 turns today were breathtaking, truly heavenly.”
Saturday’s event resembles a parallel slalom, where two skiers go head-to-head on identical courts. The competition kicks off at 9 p.m. EST with 16 knockouts through to the final at around 10:30 p.m. ET.
This event will be Shiffrin’s last chance to win a medal in Beijing.
On Twitter, she shared some hate messages she received and, in a video posted to the website, offered some advice on how to ignore negative feedback.
“You can choose to catch them, and stay with them, and let them make you want to retire, let them make you want to disappear and never be seen again,” she said, “or you can say, “Hey, I have a great sense of humour and I have so much more to offer the world, so step back and let me do my thing. “may be experiencing these hate messages, I think many of you have that fire in you, so you just keep going.”
