Laura Dern’s 15 best movies, ranked

In “The Master,” times are tough for Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a World War II veteran whose traumatic experience has made it difficult for him to reintegrate into society. He couldn’t keep a job and ended up finding himself like a stowaist. There, he meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an amazingly charismatic man who leads a movement known as The Cause. The two become attached to each other when Quell becomes part of The Cause.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” is complicated. It’s the kind of movie that works best when you know little about it and every time you see it, it reveals something new. Phoenix and Hoffman are nothing special, with Hoffman delivering one of his best performances. It’s a movie full of stellar details and impressive performances, and Amy Adams, who plays Dodd’s faithful wife, is fantastic. Laura Dern has a small but effective role in this colorful epic as Helen Sullivan, an avid Dodd follower who finds herself questioning her loyalty as he delves deeper into complex methodologies its own complex.

While “The Master” is a mediocre masterpiece, the reason it’s lower on the list (like “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) is because it’s hardly a Laura Dern movie. That said, she’s great at it, and the movie reminds us that Dern can be great, even for just a few scenes. Laura Dern’s 15 best movies, ranked
