Love Island: Laura Whitmore announces applications for 2022

Laura Whitmore has hit back at former Love Island contestant Rachel Finni, who had planned on her presenting skills.

The Irish TV presenter, 36, appeared shocked and appalled when Rachel, 29, accused her of being a subpar presenter and suggested Laura only got her role on Love Island because she was with the show’s narrator Iain Stirling is married, 34.

Laura has hosted Love Island since January 2020 – when the first and only winter edition of the show aired – and took over the reins from the late Caroline Flack, who tragically took her own life a month later at the age of 40.

Rachel suggested other established TV presenters were being overlooked in favor of Laura to replace Caroline as she discussed her time on Love Island on Murad Merali’s YouTube channel.

Laura didn’t take the criticism well

Rebecca told the host, “I’m kind of disappointed that Laura Whitmore is hosting it, I thought we were going to get a Maya Jama or AJ Odudu.”

She then quipped snidely, “The benefits you get from being married to the narrator because she’s not a great hostess.”

Rachel’s comments clearly struck a chord as Laura offered a rambling statement via Instagram Stories as she answered questions from fans and the topic of Love Island was inevitably brought up.

Love Island 2021 star Rachel Finni said Laura’s presentation was “not great”.

The mild-mannered TV star defended herself, saying: “I’m not going to devote too much energy to it because there’s always stuff like that and you just brush it off, but I think we have to be careful when we talk about women and their jobs.

“I’ve worked in television for 14 years. I won a competition to be the face of MTV and worked from job to job.

“I’ve done incredible things all over the world, I’ve worked with the best teams, but I’ve never gotten a job because of a guy I dated.”

She continued, “And it’s awful when you see if you’re dating other women because women have been talking about who they date for so many years.

“They only define themselves by who they date, despite all the work and building up before that, and they are their own individual person with their own experience.”

She added, “It’s a shame because I think that if we continue like this, we’re never really going to have full power and empowerment as sex.”

However, YouTuber Murad didn’t hold Laura in high esteem either, saying her appointment as the show’s host reeked of nepotism.
