In Ireland, women over the age of 25 are eligible for a free cervical smear test every 3 to 5 years.

A smear test can help detect abnormal cells in the cervix that can lead to a diagnosis of cancer.

Ms Phelan’s legal case against HSE and a US lab exposed the Cervical Screening scandal in which hundreds of Irish women received negative smear test results. exactly.

They were not immediately notified of case audits that identified missed opportunities.

Ultimately, it prompted a series of reviews of the CervicalCheck cervical cancer screening program.

Ms Phelan’s family said her death would “leave a void in all of our lives, which at this time seems impossible to fill”.

In a statement released by the family on Monday, her husband Jim and children Amelia and Darragh, said with “an immense burden of grief, we said our last goodbyes to dear Vicky our mark earlier today.”

“She was the heart & soul of our family unit and her passing will leave a void in all of our lives, which at this time seems impossible to fill.”
