Laxative recalled due to life-threatening health risk

Vi-Jon has recalled a number of laxatives in an expanded recall following reports of the products’ serious side effects.

According to the recall notice, the affected magnesium citrate saline oral laxatives have been withdrawn from store shelves due to possible Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens microbial contamination.

The bacterium could cause serious, life-threatening infections in immunocompromised people if they consume the recalled product. Vi-Jon said it is investigating three reports of serious side effects that could be related to the recall.

The recalled magnesium citrate oral saline laxatives are used to relieve occasional constipation, inducing bowel movements within 1/2 to six hours of consuming the product.

In this expanded recall, the company has now withdrawn all batches and flavors of the product, including cherry, grape and lemon. Vi-Jon’s first recall affected just one batch of the lemon-flavored laxative sold at CVS, while a second recall affected all of the company’s lemon-flavored laxatives sold at a number of retailers.

In the third expanded recall, the potentially contaminated laxatives were sold in 10 fl. oz. clear round plastic bottles at stores like Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Meijer, Rite Aid, HEB, Publix, Kroger and other retailers and wholesalers across the country under a number of different brand names.

A full list of recalled products can be viewed on the Food and Drug Administration website. Consumers in possession of the recalled laxatives should stop using the product and return the remaining quantity to the point of sale.

Questions about the recall can be emailed to Vi-Jon at Consumers who have problems related to the affected laxatives are urged to contact their doctor.
