Leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Ed Davey ‘Knights’ Eastbourne Schoolboy

A STUDENT was “knighted” by the Liberal Democrat leader during a visit to his school.

Sir Ed Davey joined Lib Dem City Council and Speaker of Parliament Josh Babarinde OBE at Shinewater Primary School in Eastbourne.

The visit on Friday 8 July was part of Mr. Babarinde’s OBE School Roadshow, which he launched following the award last year.

Sir Ed, knighted for his public and political service in 2016, took his Knight’s Medal with him to the school where he appeared as a guest speaker.

After a tour of the facilities, Sir Ed and Mr Babarinde gave a lecture and re-enacted the Queen’s Investiture ceremony where one child witnessed Sir Ed being knighted and another witnessed him receiving Mr Babarinde’s OBE.

Helen Evason, Deputy Headmistress, said the experience was “an absolute privilege”.

“Two children toured the school to share many of the wonderful opportunities they have at Shinewater – they were particularly pleased to show off the 3D printer and their outdoor area where Sir Ed Davey held a frog,” she said.

“Our ‘Debate Mate’ team, who recently won the national primary competition, listened to the two men discuss their personal journey to their current roles and asked challenging questions based on their own research.

“I think it’s fair to say that everyone left the room inspired and with the goal of one day being knighted or earning an OBE medal.”

Mr Babarinde said: “As a boy who was born and raised in Eastbourne, few things mean more to me than meeting local school children and sharing the message that anything is possible in our town if you dream big, work hard and get the right one To get support.

“I loved sharing this message with Sir Ed and it was an honor to introduce him to the brilliant work of Shinewater Primary.”

Sir Ed said: “Shinewater Primary School is so impressive and it was inspiring to meet some of their hardworking staff and students.

“Their state-of-the-art 3D printing technologies offer amazing opportunities for students, as do their outdoor educational facilities.

“It was an honor to visit him and it’s so clear why Ofsted gave him such a high rating at his last inspection.”
