The Presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia visited the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv yesterday, adding to a procession of European leaders who pledged their support Ukraine.
European politicians have flocked to the Ukrainian capital by train since Russian forces withdrew from the north of the country earlier this month amid stiff Ukrainian resistance.
“Heading to Kyiv with a strong message of political support and military assistance,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda tweeted, along with a picture of the Presidents next to a train.
The meeting should focus on ways to help Ukraine’s civilians and military, a spokesman for Estonian President Alar Karis said, as well as investigations into allegations of Russian war crimes, which Moscow denies.
Before meeting Mr Zelensky, the four presidents visited Borodyanka, 60km northwest of Kyiv, which the Ukrainian president had previously said was “much more horrific” than nearby Bucha in terms of alleged killings of civilians when both were under Russian occupation.
“It’s hard to put into words what we saw there and how cruel this (Russian) regime is. I just can’t even compare it to Nazis, I think it’s worse than Nazis,” Mr. Nauseda said in Borodyanka.
“Whole families were murdered and then buried on the spot, small children were raped. Hate and beast came out.
“These weren’t people (who did it), they were a mistake of nature. This terrible war must end,” he added while standing in front of burnt-out high-rise apartment buildings.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed “irritated” after the country’s President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, canceled a visit to Kyiv at the same time. Mr. Scholz said Kyiv did not want to visit Mr. Steinmeier.
of Germany picture The newspaper reported that Zelenskyy rejected Mr Steinmeier’s visit plans due to his close ties with Russia in recent years.
