League of Legends studio pays $100 million to female employees

RIOT Games has been ordered to pay $100m (£84m) to former and current employees who identify as women because of gender discrimination, including a gender pay gap.

Thousands of full-time and contract employees who have worked at the company since 2014 are set to receive payouts from the company.

In 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed accusing the company of widespread gender discrimination.

In 2019, both parties agreed to a $10 million (£8.4 million) payout before it was rejected by California’s Department of Fair Employment.

The department believed Riot should pay US$400m (£333m), a figure which Riot’s legal team called “unfounded and excessive”.

In December 2021, the studio approved the $100 million payout that was approved by the court last Friday.

Speak with axiossaid one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit:

“I hope this serves as a wake-up call for the entire industry.

“We have set a precedent that the sexist behavior that is rampant among gambling companies is unacceptable, and when companies are unwilling to address it meaningfully themselves, women have an opportunity to seek justice.

“Companies everywhere, inside and outside of gaming, need to engage in deep self-reflection and be proactive to get better.”

Riot gave a expression in December when it announced the deal, saying:

“As a company, we were at a crossroads; We could deny or apologize for the flaws in our culture, correct course, and build a better Riot. We chose the latter.

“While we’re proud of how far we’ve come since 2018, we must also take responsibility for the past.”

In addition to the money provided for in the settlement, another measure was introduced.

Riot has agreed to have its pay monitored by a third party for discrepancies for three years after the settlement.

Both Riot and the legal team on behalf of the plaintiffs agreed that the company has made a number of positive culture changes since the initial lawsuit.
