Nearly 500 Leaving Cert students have had their Irish oral exams postponed at short notice due to a lack of available examiners and “high Covid-19 rates”.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) said “postponing these exams at short notice is a necessary step due to high rates of Covid-19 in society.”

Seven different schools across the country are affected and about 500 students are affected by the total of 52,000 exams held in the subject.

The SEC said it has apologized to the students involved and said the students would receive more details about their postponed exam from their school “closer to the time.”

The exams have been rescheduled to take place during the emergency period for late oral exams from May 4th.

In a statement, the SEC said it had “notified seven schools that some Irish Oral Examinations scheduled to take place from this weekend have had to be postponed as examiners appointed for those schools’ examination centers are unable to attend.”

“Information has been made available to affected schools to help communicate with students and parents. In a message to schools for distribution to students, the SEC has apologized to affected graduate students for having to postpone these exams.”

“Leaving Certificate students will receive further details of their postponed exam from their school in a timely manner.

“Unfortunately and regrettably, despite all efforts to keep the exams running as planned, postponing these exams at short notice due to the high rates of Covid-19 in society is a necessary step.”

Exams are due to start this weekend in 750 schools in a range of languages including Irish, French, German and many more. They are expected to last until Thursday, April 14th.

A total of 95,000 exams are to be conducted by a team of 1,100 examiners in the coming period.

Education Minister Norma Foley confirmed extensive changes to this year’s Leaving Cert state exams in February.

At the time, Minister Foley said the changes would take into account the disruption to teaching and learning experienced by the graduating class of 2022.
