Left 4 Dead, the game everyone played for zombies, almost didn’t have them

According to exValve writer Chet Faliszek, left 4 Dead President and co-founder Gabe Newell didn’t want to bring zombies into the game.

Faliszek recently spoke to YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, where he spoke about a variety of topics, including his work portal, The anacrusis, and more. Host Reece Reilly primarily asked Faliszek about his work on Left 4 Dead, specifically how zombie stories often contain a number of clichés and sometimes leave little room for anything original. Which led to Newell initially pushing the team away from Zombies.

“Back then, I went to dinner with Gabe and he said, ‘If you watch zombie movies, Night Of The Living Dead is about racism, Dawn Of The Dead is about consumption,'” Faliszek said. As part of the conversation to understand the core concept of Left 4 Dead, Newell asked, “What is your game about?”

“And I think it’s about collaboration, it’s the game itself, it’s a reflection of the game,” Faliszek continued. “We were pushed more and more because I remember [Newell] said “well, let’s not do zombies, zombies are just cheesy.” At the time there wasn’t a The Walking Dead TV series and all that, so it was very cheesy.”

Faliszek explained how he watched a lot of these classic horror movies when he was younger without realizing that some of them were a bit cheesy, so again he made the decision to make the characters more aware of the environment they find themselves in do.

“So I just thought, why don’t we just take the characters and the world and make some of the characters in the world aware that they’re essentially in a zombie movie. Zoe and Lewis take it like, ‘Oh my god, that’s the thing from the movies, but they’re playing it seriously.’

Considering everyone is playing Left 4 Dead, the co-op gameplay is against hordes of zombies, and it’s probably a good thing no one listened to Newell on this particular occasion. Left 4 Dead, the game everyone played for zombies, almost didn’t have them
