But a mix of annoyance at the French side being awarded a landslide victory over them last month, frustration at their own actions and the traveling squad’s inexperience proved a powerful combination.

Van der Flier scored two of the province’s 13 attempts as they won 89-7 winners, their biggest win rate in Europe.

Overcoming a 92-17 win over Bourgoin in 2004 was never motivating, as match man Van der Flier said: “I didn’t realize we were breaking records.”

Instead, they simply want to win as kindly as possible, not for any fancy reason but the actual business of trying to chart the best possible path. in the knockout round.

The Republic of Ireland player explained: “We talked about it before the game, going out and attacking every opportunity. You’ve seen it by tapping quickly, trying to score as many points as you can.

“For me, it’s a bit of a worry that you won’t get much out of the season because it’s the first game of the season back.

“You’re up and running, we’ve been training really hard but you’re not sure what your fitness will be like without competing for a month.

“We said all the right things before the game, the focus seemed very good. There is a lot of confidence.

“We felt good before the game but I think you never know how the game will go and what the opposition will do.

“Given the way we went 28-0 in the last Montpellier, it didn’t put us in the best position, we knew we had to get as many points as we could.

“Hopefully this week goes well and every point will matter to the struggles and the like.

“Getting a little bit of momentum back in the season would be great.

BACK TO HOW TO WIN

“This obviously helps, when we haven’t played for a while you feel like there’s no motivation.

“There’s been a lot of training, a lot of hard work, so it’s good to start over on winning paths.

“We’re definitely looking to build momentum again this week.”

Van der Flier will be hoping that the way he links up with Jack Conan – who also scored two tries – and Caelan Doris could see them get the nod for The Rec on Saturday. But he knows Leo Cullen has plenty of options. He added: “We had a good balance. We’ve got a lot of engagement from each side and that’s very important.

“There are no selfish players there. There are times when someone has to try, someone has to keep the space open, and I think guys it’s nice that if someone is tired someone else can do a little bit of work. They are great, world-class players.

“Then you Rhys Ruddock and Max Deegan will move on, you Will Connors return, Scott Penny and Josh Murphy.”

The 28-year-old is grateful for support from Wicklow teammate Conan for one of his endeavors and reveals the role the other players play on his remaining as he collects. gather a overthrow at Montpellier.

He said: “James Tracy actually told me a few days ago that it was a play that they loved doing, Dan Sheehan mentioned it – said watch the subversion – and I saw the word base language. It’s possible for No 12 that it could end, so I suppose it’s a good suggestion from those people and good to take a chance.

“I don’t go into space too often, which is good. Very nice, it’s a bit blurry but very nice looking back.

“That’s a good thing for Jack, I’ve been trying to work on those helplines. You have to have a little luck with them. It’s not something I’m traditionally good at, but it makes me happy. ”
