Leo Varadkar pays tribute to the death of former MEP Alan Gillis


Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has expressed his condolences on the death of Alan Gillis, a supporter of Fine Gael and former Leinster MP.

r Gillis was President of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) in the early 1990s. In the 1994 elections he was elected to the European Parliament.

Speaking at the Fine Gael Agriculture and Rural Development Conference in Tullamore, County Offaly, Mr Varadkar said: “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Alan Gillis, he was a true gentleman and well liked by all who met him.

“A committed public representative, Gillis was elected MEP for Fine Gael in the Leinster constituency in 1994. There he was a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and put Ireland’s rural communities at the heart of Europe.

“As a past President of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Gillis has been a passionate, determined and considerate representative at home and abroad.
