‘Let’s drown her before we burn her’ – US court revealed graphic and violent text messages from Johnny Depp about Amber Heard

Johnny Depp says he’s been trying his whole life to be a “southern gentleman” when a US court was shown a series of graphic and violent text messages he’d sent about Amber Heard.

On several occasions, the actor clashed with his former partner’s attorney, Benjamin Rottenborn, when he was cross-examined during Thursday’s defamation trial.

The court was shown several conversations between Mr Depp and actor Paul Bettany, in which they discussed the Aquaman star’s “burning” and “drowning”.

In a text conversation in 2013, Mr Depp told Mr Bettany, “Let’s burn Amber.”

He later added: “Let’s drown them before we burn them. I’ll fuck her burned corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.”

Much of the evidence heard so far at the US trial, taking place in Virginia, relates to his drug use while the two were together, which Ms Heard’s lawyers say has sparked violent episodes.

Mr Depp previously testified that Ms Heard’s behavior “inspired” him to use substances and said she did not “support” his attempts at sobriety.

In a later conversation with Mr Bettany, also shown to the court, the actor said he had been drinking “all night” before picking up Ms Heard to fly to Los Angeles.

“Ugly mate…no food for days…powder…half a bottle of whiskey, a thousand Red Bull and vodkas, pills, 2 bottles of Champers on the plane,” the message read.

The text exchange was also the subject of Mr Depp’s unsuccessful libel case against the editors of The Sun newspaper in 2020.

In another series of messages to his personal manager Stephen Deuters, Mr Depp wrote: “I got drunk and trashed my room there are hookers and animals here.”

Before showing the news, Mr Rottenborn asked Mr Depp if he met the standards of a “southern gentleman”.

“If you have deep, deep roots in the South … you will be raised to be a Southern gentleman, that is, when chivalry was alive and permitted,” Mr Depp replied.

“I think I do (meet the standards), I’ve certainly done my best my whole life.”

The actor is suing Ms Heard for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote in The Washington Post which his attorneys said falsely implied he physically and sexually abused her.

On Wednesday, Mr Rottenborn reminded Mr Depp that the lawsuit was not brought about anything the actress herself had done before writing the article.

The trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court continues.
