Lewes County Council is reopening the toilets after an £80,000 refurbishment

A RAT spent £80,000 to refurbish public toilets that had been in “poor condition”.

Lewes District Council reopened the toilets on Western Road in Lewes on August 11 after refurbishment.

It said a “combination of cuts in state funding for local authorities, anti-social behavior and vandalism” had left the facilities in a poor state.

The Council has also installed a ‘Parklet’ on Western Road which will provide seating, planters and secure bicycle parking.

A council spokesman said toilet refurbishment and maintenance had been a priority since the Cooperatives Alliance took control of Lewes District Council.

Councilor Johnny Denis, Senior Member for Communities and Customers, said: “We have pledged to improve the District’s public toilets and the opening of the Western Road facilities is positive evidence of that commitment.

“The toilets have been redesigned and reflect a standard that we aim to achieve in all of our public facilities.”

Councilor Matthew Bird, Senior Sustainability Officer, said: “With the refurbished public toilets and new parklet now in place, the experience for passers-by and the street scene in general has greatly improved.

“The public sector is important and has been neglected in the past, but the Cooperative Alliance is committed to reversing that trend and I’m pleased that so many people are happy with our progress.”
