LIFE Stories presenter Kate Garraway was shocked and burst into cheeky applause after her guest John Barnes made the “sexist” comment.
The former footballer is the first celebrity to join the Good Morning Britain presenter after she took over from longtime presenter Piers Morgan.
Kate, 54, and John, 58, sat down to chat about his Liverpool FC career in the 1980s when the star shared how he met his wife, Andrea.
He went on to detail how he met his ex at a bar in Liverpool, and didn’t expect her to be so “smart” because of her looks.
The TV presenter hit back at the “sexist” comment by saying she felt it wasn’t fair that he suggested someone “couldn’t be charming and smart”.
John explains: “I’ve known Andrea for a long time and I’ve always felt that she is someone special, she has this light in her, thanks to which she exudes this aura.
“She’s very smart, she’s got a law degree and a master’s in epidemiology and a master’s in biology. She’s very, very smart.”
“That’s what I love about her because, put it this way, she doesn’t look the same as she does now. She looks as if she were a very glamorous blonde,” he added before cut off by Kate.
“Wait a second – are you assuming that seducers can’t be smart?” she turned around startled.
“That’s what I mean, she’s just as smart as you are,” John added, clutching his gun as Kate sat back and nodded.
It comes like Viewers were full of praise for New Life Story host when she took over former host Piers, 56, for her first episode.
Fans immediately took to social media to heap praise on Kate as the interview began, saying she was “smashing it”.
“Smash it Kate Garraway on Life Story,” one fan wrote on Twitter, shortly agreeing: “Kate Garraway’s life story definitely has its charm!”
“You broke it, your interview with John was amazing and your skills exceptional,” said another social media user.
One in four wrote: “The shoe was big to fill, but you completely smashed it,” as one in five said: “Stories of a bloody smashed life. Wonderful lady. Hooray.”
Meanwhile, Piers admitted it was “weird” to hand over his talk show mantle to his friend Kate as he also posted on Twitter.
“As I told Kate today, it feels a bit odd to hand over the reins of a show I’ve been putting on for so long,” the presenter wrote alongside a snap of the couple together.
“At least it’s someone I love. Wish her all the best.”
Kate also admitted that it felt “strange” that she would host the show as she discussed her first episode with Ben Shephard on Good Morning Britain.
Susanna Reid announced on the show on Thursday morning: “Tonight at nine o’clock is Kate Garraway’s Life Story.”
Kate was quick to reply: “Sounds weird!”
