“Lifts of Moher” – electric buggies to improve accessibility of the Cliffs of Moher

When US tourist Laura Sitters, who recently sustained a hip injury, arrived at the Cliffs of Moher, she was delighted to find an electric vehicle waiting to take her to the iconic views.

I was told I could take a golf cart ride to see the view,” she says.

The “Golf Carts” are two new electric buggies that have been added to Co Clare’s popular visitor attraction to enhance the experience for visitors with disabilities or limited mobility.

Dubbed the Burren Buggy and Wild Atlantic Shuttle, the carriages are operated by trained staff and offer a guided tour of the Co Clare attraction from the cliff-top viewing platforms to O’Brien’s Tower.

Associate Kieran Kelly drove Ms. Sitters on her tour.

“People with limited mobility for any reason should be able to see the cliffs and the waves crashing down the base of the cliffs,” she said in a press release from the attraction.

“And that’s only possible with people like Mr. Kelly and the golf carts.”

“Moher’s elevators are proving extremely popular, particularly among people with mobility issues, people with disabilities, the elderly, their families and carers,” said Geraldine Enright, director of the Cliffs of Moher Experience.

“The buggies are electric, in keeping with our sustainability ethos, and are widely accepted by viewers who appreciate the care and service provided to those in need.”

The visitor center building and key viewing areas are already “fully accessible,” she says, and disabled parking and drop-off are in place. Wheelchairs are also available for use.

The Cliffs are Ireland’s most popular natural attraction with a record 1.6 million visitors in 2019 – a year that saw a €350,000 restoration of O’Brien’s Tower.

Admission to the experience is €10 per person during peak hours (11am-4pm) and €7 per person off-peak. Children under 12 are free, and family rates are available.

The new electric buggies are free but subject to availability. Pre-registration is not required (cliffsofmoher.ie).
