Lily James: Portraying Pamela Anderson, born out of anger at the star’s mistreatment

Lily James says her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in a new TV series about the Baywatch star’s infamous sextape was born “out of anger” at how society was treating her.

The role in Pam And Tommy earned the British actress her first Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie on Tuesday.

Speaking to US outlet Deadline after the commitment, the 33-year-old said the production team was with Anderson “every second” while he was creating the Disney series.

James revealed he hasn’t heard from Anderson, adding: “And that’s fair enough and I have to respect that boundary.

“All we wanted to do was shed light on that story and unveil it,” she said.

“It really is the ugly truth of how horrible what happened to them was and every second of it we were on Pamela’s side.

“I hope that resonated, but beyond that, I could never know how she felt, but those were our intentions.”

The actress noted that she hopes the show is part of the movement to hold people accountable following the #MeToo revelations.

She continued, “I think everyone is more open and willing to hear these stories and look at them and their own guilt, which is the biggest thing for me. We look at things we were taught as young girls, things we were shown.

“We put up with behavior for so long and it was very, very toxic … so it’s just so important for me to be a part of a show that explores that and hopefully keeps that dynamic going.”

She added: “This has been an ongoing exploration of what I’ve experienced in my work and in the media, so I think a lot of it came out of anger and an attempt to explore that.

“We’re not looking for answers, we weren’t making a documentary, we were just trying to get a different perspective on what happened at a very defining moment in popular culture.”

The show received ten nominations in total, including a nomination for Sebastian Stan and his portrayal as Anderson’s rock star lover Tommy Lee, and for makeup and hairstyling.

James said she was “so proud” of the entire team following the multitude of nominations as they “were really on it together” during the project. Lily James: Portraying Pamela Anderson, born out of anger at the star’s mistreatment
