A serious incident has been reported after a fire broke out in an accident and emergency room at a Lincolnshire hospital in the early hours of the morning.

Lincoln County Hospital patients and staff have been evacuated from the affected department, which is closed to the public until further notice.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least five fire devices at the scene of the fire, which was reported around 4:15 a.m.

The Trust, which runs the hospital this morning, confirmed a serious incident had been reported.

In a statement, the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We reported a major incident of a fire at Lincoln County Hospital this morning.

“Patients and staff were evacuated from the emergency room in the early hours of the morning. No one was injured and patients are now being treated in other areas of the hospital. The fire has been extinguished but our emergency room remains closed at this time.

“While we work to reopen our emergency department, we ask that you refrain from visiting the department. If you require non-life threatening urgent or emergency care please call 111 or visit NHS 111 online for advice on the most appropriate service for your needs.

“Please continue to call 999 for life-threatening emergencies.”

Patients with X-ray, CT and MRI appointments were asked not to visit the hospital, while other patients were told they would be contacted.

The Trust later added that no one was injured in the fire.

A statement said: “Patients and staff were evacuated from the emergency department in the early hours of the morning.

“No one was injured and patients are now being treated in other areas of the hospital. The fire has been extinguished but our emergency room remains closed at this time.”

The Lincolnshire Police Control Room announced the closure at 4.21am on Tuesday (29 March).

It tweeted: “Due to a fire at the Lincoln Hospital Emergency Room it is currently closed until further notice. Please avoid attending.”

The fire is believed to have been extinguished but it is unknown what caused it this morning.

The extent of the damage and the extent of the service disruption is also unclear.

People have been advised to avoid the hospital if they can while the investigation continues.

In response to the news, one person said on Twitter: “Oh my god I’m so sorry to hear about this. I hope everyone is safe including patients, doctors, nurses, surgeons.”

Another added: “Oh my gods it’s always full of sick people!!

“What a disaster.”
