He has been tipped as a potential target for a range of clubs including Tottenham and West Ham.

But it is Warblers who now seems to be Lingard’s last hope of securing a spot before the window slams on the deadline day.

Initial talks broke down between the two clubs as Man Utd are demanding a loan fee of £2.5m and £12m if Newcastle avoid relegation from the Premier League.

But Toon believes there may now be some flexibility when it comes to those numbers and they are ‘optimistic’ that an agreement can be reached.

Based on The Athletic, Lingard, who will be a free agent in the summer, spoke with manager Ralf Rangnick at Carrington training ground on Sunday to try to force a deal through.

He will continue those discussions with the German and the club today.

He said: “About Jesse, it’s like some other players, he’s a really good player, that’s normal at other clubs, Newcastle have shown an interest in him. but I’m not the one to deal with that.

“If you ask me now what will happen in the next 10 days, I cannot answer that question, I am afraid.

“Like I said, it’s a question of what the player wants, what other options does he have, does he stand a chance of winning game time, I can’t answer for him, it has to be done. shown by the players.

“He is a very good player, a technical player. At Manchester United it is not so easy, we have other players who can play in that position and we cannot change from there. this game to another five or six positions.”

However, United have let Anthony Martial go to Sevilla and Donny van de Beek leave Everton this month – both on loan.

And the club confirmed on Sunday that striker Mason Greenwood “will not return to training or playing games until further notice”. after he was arrested.

Man Utd are trying to secure a place in the top four this season after an unstable start to the campaign.
