Lisa Goddard, 55, passed away; Make climate data available to those who need it

Dr. Goddard became director of the institute shortly after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration withdrew its funding – a blow to a center heavily dependent on government support.

With the institute facing low morale and an uncertain future, she regrouped her staff and secured new and diverse funding. She has since redoubled her outreach efforts, developing lasting relationships with groups such as the American Agency for International Development, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and dozens of governments around the world.

“She was a visionary,” said Maureen E. Raymo, director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia. “She took IRI and turned it into a powerhouse that provides climate services to the world.”

Lisa Marie Goddard was born on September 23, 1966 in Sacramento, California. Her father, Glenn Goddard, works for the state government and her mother, Marie Betts, is a teacher.

Along with her husband, she is survived by her mother; her older sister, Kristina Zimmerman; and her sons, Sam and Matthew.

Dr. Goddard graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a physics degree in 1988. Climate science was still in its infancy at the time, but public awareness of things like ozone depletion was increasing, and She saw an opportunity to put her scientific training to practical use.

At Princeton, where she received her doctorate in atmospheric and oceanic sciences in 1995, she studied the effects of El Niño and La Niña, developing models that could predict alternating climate events How that interstitial in the Pacific Ocean affects temperature and precipitation in remote parts of the world.
