Lisa O’Rourke marches into World Cup quarter-finals with a commanding win in Turkey

Roscommon boxer Lisa O’Rourke celebrated her 20th birthday in style this afternoon by securing a spot in the light middleweight quarterfinals at the World Championships in Istanbul.

The Castlerea-native Olympic Boxing Club Galway boxer has come of age at these championships after underlining her potential in March when she was crowned European Under-22 Champion.

Lisa, a sister of Tokyo Olympian Aoife, now has two wins under her belt in Turkey and is just one win away from a guaranteed medal.

She dominated her round of 16 match against Maria Hernandez Moronto of the Dominican Republic.

After the first round, she was leading 4-1 thanks to her agile footwork that allowed her to stay out of her opponent’s reach. She had an unassailable 20-18 advantage on three of the judges cards after six minutes of action – the other two officials had the fight level.

O’Rourke also scored in the final round as she sauntered to a 5-0 unanimous victory, becoming the first Irish boxer to qualify for the quarterfinals. She will be back in action on Monday.

Unfortunately, there is no category for light middleweight boxers at the Paris Olympics. Lisa O’Rourke marches into World Cup quarter-finals with a commanding win in Turkey
