Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd goal Victor Osimhen decides criteria for next club

Liverpool and Arsenal are among the notable contenders vying to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a superb season at Napoli and the Italian side are keen to capitalize on his progress this summer. His agents were given the green light to push their client around First LeagueWith Manchester United also linked to the £80million-rated star.

Osimhen is open to a Naples departure but only wants to join one Champions League Club that has excluded newcastle for now at least. The player has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 28 games for the Serie A team, which is third behind AC Milan and Inter Milan.

His successful season came despite a serious facial injury in November that meant he missed out on Nigeria’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. Osimhen has been required to wear a protective mask since his return in mid-January and has scored seven goals in his last ten league games.

And the striker has admitted his burning desire to prove his doubters wrong has spurned him to greater success. “From the moment I had my surgery, I read some people saying, ‘The season is over for him,'” Osimhen said BBC Sport Africa.

“‘If he comes back, he wouldn’t face a defender.’ ‘Even with a mask, he can’t nod the ball’ and stuff like that. Above all, these doubts are actually a motivation for me because I know myself and I know what kind of heart I have. Being back and reaching the goals is a big thing for me.

“I appreciate the people who have worked so hard with me to make sure I’m okay even after I’ve had the surgery and everything. They probably doubted that I would return to my best because of the impact the facial incident could have had on my mental health.”

Osimhen already has success in four different leagues, having played in Belgium, Wolfsburg in Germany and France with Lille before joining Napoli in 2020. Ahead of his next move, he believes playing in various leagues, particularly Serie A, has shaped him to be successful wherever he ends up.

He added: “It’s really physical, just like what we heard before I even became a professional footballer. “But a player [like me] never backs down, no matter what the circumstances, no matter what the goal line is, no matter what team I’m playing against. I want to go so hard, I want to go so extreme to reach my goals to try to help the team.

“I believe that I can actually achieve more without these early setbacks. And I challenge myself to do more than I have in previous seasons. Of course I did it in Belgium. I did it in Lille. Of course I will do it wherever I go.”
