Liverpool suffered a setback in their quest for the Premier League title on Saturday as they held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

The Reds fell behind in the second half after Son Heung-min turned in from close range, although they equalized after Luis Diaz’s long-range shot was massively deflected past Hugo Lloris.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side return to the top of the table, although Manchester City can pull away a game in hand against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Klopp laments Spurs antics

After the game, Klopp was unhappy with Tottenham’s waste of time during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Manager Antonio Conte had clearly set Spurs to deeply defend and frustrate the home crowd, which they did to great effect. In the end, the hosts needed a deflected shot to break their five-man line.

It seems Spurs also got under Klopp’s skin when he referred to the skill of the game after the final whistle.

“For all the praise for Tottenham, a world-class opponent, they won against City – the gameplay works for those games but they’re still fifth and for everything they’ve wasted time – it doesn’t make it any easier, it’s smart , but not easy.”

Spurs oust Liverpool stars

The attacking trio of Diaz, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have been irresistible for Liverpool in recent weeks but Spurs were able to find ways to limit their influence on Saturday night.

Despite sitting deep for a long time, Tottenham reacted quickly when the aforementioned trio got the ball, with Cristian Romero and Ben Davies excelling in defensive work.

Eventually, while Diaz scored, he had to get much deeper to receive the ball to make an impact.

“This strategy was effective even if it left gaps between the lines, although Jurgen Klopp will have been frustrated at how his side failed to capitalize on those gaps,” said Freddie Keighley in his assessment of the game. “The Reds may have missed the presence of Naby Keita in midfield as the Guinean likes to drive the ball at his feet.”

Carvalho praised after Fulham farewell

Fabio Carvalho received a resounding endorsement from Fulham manager Marco Silva after the youngster made his final appearance for the club on Saturday.

The midfielder has been a key part of the Fulham side that sauntered to league success this season, although the playmaker is expected to work with Liverpool instead of the London club in 2022-23.

Silva regretted not being able to keep the 19-year-old but predicted he would have a bright future in the game.

“I think he (Carvalho) has a bright career ahead of him. I think he’s a top talent,” said the former Everton manager.

“Unfortunately, I probably came a little late to this football club. With more time, he would have renewed his contract before that. Absolutely. It was a tough moment for us that we couldn’t extend the contract before that. And of course, if a player starts playing at that age like he’s been playing week in and week out and is performing very well in every single game.”
