Liverpool vs Brighton: Mark Lawrenson gives us his prediction

Mark Lawrenson’s predictions used to be part of preparations for a Premier League weekend.

For about 20 years he looked at the high profile fixture lists and laid his neck on the block for the BBC.

Chris Sutton has taken over this season.

Lawrenson’s predictions didn’t often go down well with Albion fans.

We asked him to make a comeback for his old clubs’ meeting tomorrow and guess what – Albion fans won’t like what he says this time either.

He has NOT “won away” – but he is excited to see how the Seagulls fare with new boss Roberto De Zerbi and believes they are well placed to cope with recent upheaval.

He also warned that Liverpool are just beginning to gain momentum.

Lawrenson told The Argus: “It’s going to be a good football game.

“I think Liverpool will win 2-0.

“They’re not at a stage where they’re running ragged teams yet. You’re just warming up.

“Thiago is massive for Liverpool because he’s pushing the buttons for everyone.

“But they have such a range of players up front that it’s overwhelming.”

Lawrenson once played 159 games without predicting defeat by Liverpool – but he wasn’t often wrong.

But there can be pleasant surprises.

For example the way Albion took last year’s game at Anfield to their hosts for a long time when he predicted they would not be able to.

He admitted: “You know what? In fact, they could have won the game. They played extremely well.

“I’m going to this game and the really interesting thing is how much time the Brighton manager has had with his players – like with everyone together?

“Not very much. He’s had to watch clips of games 24 hours a day this season to get an idea of how they’re playing.

“It will be interesting to see in his first game if he wants to play a little bit differently.

“He knows he has the basis of a very good side and it’s an extremely well run club, they’re well supported, everything about it is good and over the years in the Premier League they’ve always improved, which is the It has to be.

“We won’t really know anything about De Zerbi until maybe six, ten games later.

“But I can’t imagine him going to Liverpool and saying, ‘Just go out there and enjoy it and attack them from all angles.’

“Honestly, I don’t think that would be a good idea.

“I think you’re going to get a very honest account of Brighton. You always do that with a new boss.

“But it’s not the same because the old manager isn’t there. Things are different.”

Lawrenson made a name for himself at Albion, helping Liverpool rule England and Europe.

He hasn’t been very impressed with the Reds so far this season but isn’t worried about them.

He said: “Jurgen Klopp has a rule which is press, press, press and actually it’s something they haven’t done well so far this season.

“They will improve, I have no doubt about that.

“I think they’re probably around 65-70%.

“They played the longest last season considering the Champions League.

“What’s special about Klopp is that when the players come back from their season break, he really starts with them in terms of fitness.

“He did the same type of fitness prep in fewer days.

“I think that’s why they had these injuries – strains and strains.

“When I saw them in the first few games, they were a little undercooked.

“They had eight injured players at one point.

“You can see they’re going to be a very good side who just got off to a decent start to the season.”
