Liverpool will hit back at the Fabio Carvalho transfer in the summer after narrowly missing the deadline date for the Fulham ace

Final Liverpool agreed to the West Londoner’s fee and credit terms and loaned him back to Craven Cottage for the remainder of this season.

But they were unable to complete the necessary paperwork in time before the 11pm deadline to complete the transaction.

Liverpool still hope to land the attacking midfielder this summer under a pre-contract agreement when his Fulham contract expires.

They can negotiate compensation fees with Cottagers to avoid going to a court.

Carvalho has been interested by a number of Premier League clubs, including Southampton.

The Lisbon-born player has seven goals this season to keep Fulham five points clear at the top of the Championship table.

And the Cottagers’ desire to keep him until at least the summer was emphasized by boss Marco Silva last week.

He said afterwards: “Fabio will be with us until the end of the season.

“I want to see him here for many years to come.

“From day one, I tried to keep him. It is not surprising that clubs are interested in Fabio. We are talking about a young player with great talent.

“It’s not easy because he’s in the last year of his contract, but that’s the reality.

“It is very difficult for us to renew with him, but we are trying.

“It’s always difficult for a talented player – even with a contract it’s hard to keep him, and without that it’s even worse.”
