A man in China was rescued just before he was due to be driven away for cremation after undertakers saw his body bag moving.
Shocking footage surfaced on Chinese social media of officers wearing personal protective equipment removing the yellow body bag from a hearse and opening it to find the pensioner very much alive.
The video shows workers demanding that staff at a nursing home in Shanghai come and inspect the “corpse.”
A person can be heard screaming, “Come here and see if he’s dead? He’s still breathing! Didn’t you see that he was moving?”
The body bag is opened and a covering pulled off the head of the nursing home patient inside, who turns out not to be dead.
“He’s alive, never cover his face again,” says one man angrily as staff roll the pensioner back to the nursing home on a stretcher.
Government officials from the Putuo district in Shanghai confirmed that staff at the nursing home placed the man in the body bag and arranged for his cremation.
The pensioner is in stable condition after being transferred to a hospital for a comprehensive evaluation.
The nursing home has apologized for the mistreatment of its patient and a spokesman said it is working with the Putuo government to set up a special unit to investigate how the incident, which took place on Sunday, happened.
Shanghai is under strict lockdown for a month as part of government measures to purge China’s financial capital of Covid as thousands of cases are reported every day.
Workers have been ordered by officials to quarantine at their offices and robotic dogs have been deployed on city streets to remind people to stay indoors.
A drone with red and white flashing lights circled over the city.
