It’s not often that Democrats burst into tears over a message from former Vice President Dick Cheney. However, his campaign ad for his daughter, Republican Liz Cheney—part swan song, part defiance, and part nostalgia—tells us more about the party’s seedy state than any Democrat ad this cycle.
In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been a person who poses a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” he said.
Coming from a former vice president and secretary of defense responsible for defending America against enemy nations and foreign terrorists is quite a statement.
Cheney focuses solely on Trump’s threat to democracy. “He tried to steal the last election with lies and violence to keep himself in power after voters rejected him. He’s a coward,” says Cheney.
“A real man would not lie to his supporters. He lost his election and he lost big. I know it, he knows it, and deep down I think most Republicans know it.” For a party obsessed with male strength, there is no harsher reproach.
In contrast, Cheney says his daughter Liz is “fearless.” And in a rebuke to the servile careerists and Trump cranks, he declares, “There’s nothing more important she will ever do than lead the effort to ensure Donald Trump never comes near the Oval Office again — and she will.” be successful.”
Long after the longtime Republicans who could never reject the “big lie” have left public life, Liz Cheney will be revered. What you do – and the importance of the things you do – matters, not your years of service.
Republicans’ contortions to appease Trump seem unlikely to pay off. There’s nothing particularly important or noteworthy about staying in a secure congressional seat for decades.
One is reminded of Sir Thomas More’s jab A man for all seasonsto his power-hungry accuser: “It’s no use a man to give his soul for all the world… except Wales?” It’s an admonition that applies to virtually the entire Trump-supporting Republican party.
Dick Cheney’s ad is exceptional not only for the pride and emotion it conveys, but also because it’s about a theme: the preservation of democracy. Democrats are not mentioned. There is no mention of inflation, energy, Russia or any other topic – and with good reason. No worthwhile political goal can be achieved without defending democracy and its survival.
Liz Cheney’s chances in the Aug. 16 Wyoming primary, deep in Trump country, are not high. But even if Cheney loses, she still has work to do. She must finish the important work of the January 6th Committee of the House of Representatives. She could then set out to denounce Republican candidates who continue to deny the results of the 2020 presidential election and remain a threat to democracy.
Arizona alone could take a long time on this front: GOP nominees for Senate (Blake Masters), Governor (Kari Lake), and Secretary of State (Mark Finchem) make up a rogue gallery of “big-lie” fanatics and conspiracy fanatics. dealer.
Then Cheney and limited-term Republican governor Larry Hogan could face off against two of the nation’s more despicable GOP gubernatorial candidates. These include Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania (who traveled to Washington on Jan. 6 for the “Stop the Steal” rally, fomented the “big lie” and had to distance himself from a top adviser after his blatantly anti-Semitic remarks were exposed) and in Maryland, Dan Cox, another 2020 election denier.
None of these GOP candidates — in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Maryland and beyond — can be trusted to accept the 2024 election results. These mini-Trumps pose a “clear, present danger,” as former Judge Michael Luttig described before the committee on Jan. 6.
With her work done on the committee, Liz Cheney must not fail in her efforts to prevent Trump from ever becoming president again — even if that task means running for the nomination of a party that values her allegiance to the US Constitution and the US -Constitution has rejected the truth. It takes every ounce of that fearlessness her father admires. (©Washington Post)
