Liz Truss Prime Minister until 2023 to avoid becoming the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history.
That prime ministeralong with Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, are due to meet later in the day before announcing that key elements of the budget will be abandoned in a bid to reassure markets.
Days of market turmoil followed amid concerns about the impact of his £43 billion tax gift on public finances.
The announcement comes amid reports senior Tories are planning the possibility of replacing Ms Truss with a joint ticket from Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, with the Times newspaper also reporting that party figures are considering replacing her with a “single candidate”.
Is Liz Truss the shortest-serving prime minister?
The person currently holding the title is Tory statesman George Canning, who spent 118 full days as Prime Minister in 1827 before dying in office of illness.
Ms. Truss would surpass that number of days on January 3, 2023.
There have been several prime ministers who have failed to stay in office for a year for various reasons.
These include two Conservative prime ministers over the past 100 years: Andrew Bonar Law, who worked 211 days in 1922-23 before resigning due to ill health, and Alec Douglas-Home, who managed 364 days in 1963-64 before losing a general election .
During the 18th and early 19th centuries, it was not uncommon for prime ministers to hold office for only a year or two, or to hold the job briefly on several occasions.
Once Liz Truss has surpassed the 118-day mark set by George Canning, she can aim for other predecessors she hopes to surpass, including the 4-day 1782-83.
Is Kwasi Kwarteng the Chancellor with the shortest term in office?
Meanwhile, Kwasi Kwarteng has already made sure he doesn’t become the shortest-serving Chancellor of the Exchequer in modern history.
Mr Kwarteng has now spent 38 full days in the role, eight more than that of Conservative Iain Macleod, who died in 1970 after just 30 days in office.
