ARGUS readers have reacted to the news that Liz Truss has been elected the next Prime Minister.
Having won the Conservative Party leader election over Rishi Sunak, Truss will now replace Boris Johnson when he steps down from his position on Tuesday 6 September.
Readers have shared their thoughts on the country’s new leader, whose first job will be to deal with the looming energy bill crisis.
One reader, Allan King, said: “If she can clean up the mess Boris left in her wake, like stopping energy companies from raising prices again and bringing them back to previous levels, then yes, if she can’t and she agrees to the price increase, then no.”
Truss was elected after defeating a number of other candidates including Penny Mourdant and current Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi.
She will now travel to Balmoral to be formally appointed Prime Minister before naming her cabinet.
Much of the reaction to the new prime minister has focused on how her cabinet will deal with the cost of living crisis. While some congratulated Truss on winning the leadership election, others were skeptical of how effective it will be.
Supporting Truss, Dan Ramsay said: “She’ll do a great job I’m sure”. On the other hand, Steve Wallis-Tayler commented, “We’re doomed, we’re all doomed”.
Reaction to Truss’ election was mixed in the Brighton and Sussex region, with some choosing to use the opportunity to criticize the government.
Taking to Twitter, user @wearebrighton said: “Liz Truss is the worst appointment I’ve seen and that includes Jeff Wood as Brighton manager. God help us,” he compares the new prime minister to the manager who was sacked after winning just two games in three months.
