Liz Truss resigns: Sussex MPs react

Sussex MPs have reacted to the resignation of Liz Truss after just 44 days as Prime Minister.

From calling for a general election to describing their quick exit as a “revolving door of chaos,” county lawmakers have expressed frustration at the government’s recent crisis.

Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, called for snap elections.

“Liz Truss’s leadership has ended – and our country has run out of patience,” she said.

“It’s not just Liz Truss’ staggering incompetence that has plagued the country – it’s the chaos and division at a time when we need unity to address the issues we face.

“These problems are multiple: a tank economy; a cost of living scandal; a climate emergency; a natural environment that is under attack.

“We need immediate solutions: reducing inequality through progressive taxation, including a wealth tax; keeping people’s bills down and homes warm with a nationwide insulation program; Protecting and restoring nature with an effective organic farming system; Address the climate emergency by investing in cheap, domestic renewable energy and leaving fossil fuels in the ground forever.

“But the Tory psychodrama will not liberate them. We cannot go on like this – anything but a general election is an undemocratic and outrageous result of this shameful mess.”

Labor MP for Hove and Portslade Peter Kyle also said it was time for an election. “This revolving door of chaos cannot go on,” he said.

“We are witnessing crisis after crisis in Downing Street and the British public is paying the price.

“The Tories have lost their government mandate. Labor would give Britain a fresh start with our plans to boost the economy and rebuild the country for a fairer, greener future.

“We need new elections now”

Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, said yesterday was “not the best day to be a Conservative MP” after chaos erupted over a vote on fracking.

However, after the PM’s resignation, he said “today is looking better”.

A spokesman for Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs, Andrew Griffith, was unavailable for comment. The MP also serves as Minister of Finance.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Eastbourne and Willingdon, Josh Babarinde OBE, said Liz Truss had “devastated” the economy.

“Boris Johnson failed our country and Liz Truss ruined our economy,” he said.

“The people of Eastbourne and Willingdon deserve better.

“This Conservative Party has proven time and time again that they are not fit to lead our country.

“We need and deserve general elections now. We cannot let Conservative MPs get away with supporting more chaotic governments.

“The next election in Eastbourne and Willingdon will be a choice between five more years of Conservative party chaos or a hard-working Liberal Democrat MP who puts the local people first.” Liz Truss resigns: Sussex MPs react
