Liz Truss slams Sunak for economy in visit to Sussex

Secretary of State Liz Truss has claimed former Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s plans for the economy would spell a “disaster” for homeowners, businesses and workers.

The pair have continued to exchange barbs amid an increasingly heated leadership contest to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister.

At a campaign rally in Sussex yesterday, Ms Truss attacked Mr Sunak, telling Sky News his plans would “deter people who want to invest in the UK”.

She said: “Let’s be clear, his plan is to increase taxes.

“He plans to increase corporate taxes and bring our taxes to the same level as France.

“It will deter people who want to invest in the UK. And I know there are countless opportunities across the country.

“Less investment going forward will mean fewer jobs, fewer opportunities, lower wages and lower productivity – so it cuts our noses off in defiance.

“The fact is that in our manifesto we promised not to increase national insurance. I thought it was wrong at the time, so I would undo that.”

The comments came ahead of a second televised head-to-head battle between the two leadership contenders organized by broadcasters TalkTV and The Sun.

However, the debate was dramatically halted and subsequently canceled after presenter Kate McCann passed out live on air.

The show was a little over half over when a loud noise interrupted the Secretary of State mid-sentence. Viewers saw Ms Truss covering her face with her hands in shock before the debate was taken off the air.

TalkTV’s owners, News UK, confirmed Kate McCann was fine but the debate would be canceled following medical advice.

Ms McCann, political editor at TalkTV, was set to co-moderate the debate with Harry Cole, political editor of The Sun, but was forced to step down after she tested positive for Covid-19.

Both Ms. Truss and Mr. Sunak tweeted to wish the journalist well.
