Lizzo debuted the title track from her forthcoming album, Special, while completing her first dual role as presenter and musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
The 33-year-old singer was introduced to the nightly US sketch show stage by her mother before treating viewers to a rendition of her new track while wearing a bright pink dress.
The song, which reminds listeners that they are special no matter what they’ve been through, is taken from their forthcoming album Special, which will be released July 15.
Sharing a video of the performance on Instagram, the singer wrote: “It was a gamble my mum introduced me cause she is such a diva she could have sung the song herself love you mom @sharijeffe
“Here’s ‘SPECIAL’ from my new album ‘SPECIAL’ out July 15th @nbcsnl only.”
Fans and artists shared their support for the song, including musician Kalifa, formerly known as Le1f, who said: “This performance completely choked me. Congratulations on this night, a great moment. I’m so happy for you. Ilysm”.
The singer-rapper-flutist also performed her new single About Damn Time and starred in several skits alongside the cast of Saturday Night Live.
During her opening monologue, she referenced her TedTalk about twerking and the rumors she’s dated several different men in Hollywood, including being pregnant with Chris Evans’ baby — a story she admitted to starting on TikTok.
