Lockdown TikTok star Sam Ryder represents UK at Eurovision

TikTok star Sam Ryder has been announced as the UK contestant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

He’s the singer-songwriter who will be performing the track Space Man at the grand finale in Turin, Italy, in May.

Ryder is well known for covering songs on TikTok during the lockdown and has so far amassed 12 million followers, making him the most followed UK music artist on the platform, according to BBC.

“As a fan of Eurovision since I was a child, I am honored to have had the opportunity to sing at an event alongside some of the most talented creators, performers and musicians,” said Ryder. Europe.

“I’m hoping to sing my heart out in a way the UK can be proud and recommending a song I wrote with friends last summer makes the whole experience even more special. See you soon guys. you in Turin, legends!”

The singer co-wrote the track Space Man with Grammy-winning musician Amy Wadge, who has worked with Ed Sheeran and Max Wolfgang.

As the world shut down in March 2020, Ryder began uploading covers to TikTok, attracting the attention of global stars including Justin Bieber and Alicia Keys.

He then signed to record label Parlophone, part of Warner Music Group, and released his debut EP The Sun’s Gonna Rise in 2021.

The record’s singles, Whirlwind and Tiny Riot, have been hugely successful and he recently completed his first UK tour as well.

Ryder was selected to compete for the UK award in partnership between the BBC and global music management company TaP Music, which includes Lana Del Rey and Ellie Goulding among its clients.

The news was revealed by radio DJ Scott Mills on Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James.

The 2021 competition was held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, after the show was canceled in 2020, and Italian rock band Maneskin won with their song Zitti E Buoni.

The UK suffered a crushing defeat when their entry, singer James Newman, being the only person to fail to receive a score from both the jury and the public vote, came in at the bottom of the rankings.

The contest’s producers also recently announced that Russia will no longer participate in this year’s competition after invading Ukraine.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said in a statement that the inclusion of a Russian entry in the competition in Turin in May would render the contest “misleading”.

Brooke Scullion from Derry will represent Ireland, with the song That Rich, which she co-wrote with Karl Zine and Izzy Warner.

The Eurovision final takes place on May 14.
