Long list of International Book Awards 2022 announced

Olga Tokarczuk and David Grossman are racing to win the second International Bookstore Prize for Fiction.

The judge has announced 13 books on this year-long list, chosen from 135 novels published in the UK or Ireland by writers of any nationality, following a record number of submissions. .

The 13 shortlisted works have been translated from 10 languages ​​and originated in 12 countries on four continents.

Polish writer and activist Tokarczuk, 60, won the 2018 award for her novel Flight, translated by Jennifer Croft.

That same year, Tokarczuk won the Nobel Prize for Literature, for what the Nobel laureates described as “narrative imagination with encyclopedic passion that embodies transgression as a form of life”.

Tokarczuk’s The Books Of Jacob has been shortlisted for the 2022 award. The 912-page novel is divided into seven books.

The International Booker is awarded each year for one book of fiction – a collection of novels or short stories – and, according to the award, “aims to further encourage the publication and reading of works of the quality of the mind.” fantasies from around the world and more recognition of the role of translators”.

The prize consists of £50,000, divided equally between the author and translator of the winning book.

In 2022, each shortlisted author and translator will receive £2,500, up from £1,000 in previous years and bringing the total prize pool to £80,000.

He is once again running for the prize for his novel More Than I Love My Life, also translated from Hebrew by Cohen.

David Diop won the 2021 prize for his novel Night All Blood Is Black, originally written in French and translated into English by Anna Moschovakis.

Following the announcement, Night All Blood Is Black sales were up 447% from the previous week.

Former US president Barack Obama also listed At Night All Blood Is Black on his summer reading list.

The 2022 International Bookstore Awards are selected by a panel of 2022 judges, which includes translator Frank Wynne, author and scholar Merve Emre, writer and attorney Petina Gappah, writer and comedian Viv Groskop, and translator and author Jeremy Tiang.

The shortlist for the International Fiction Prize will be announced on April 7.

The announcement of the award winners will take place on May 26 at a ceremony at One Marylebone in London.
