Look in your pantry for this cheese sold in these states

Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling a cheese product that contains an allergen not listed on the label. It was sold in three states.

The affected Zerto Fontal cheese products contain egg lysozyme, an egg white protein, according to the company’s announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. However, the labels of the products do not indicate its presence.

People who are allergic to eggs may get an allergic reaction when consuming egg proteins because their body sees it as a “foreign invader” and releases chemicals to defend the body against it, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI). explained.

In fact, egg is one of the most common food allergens, and reactions can range from mild to “life-threatening” anaphylaxis. Although avoiding eggs is considered the “best way” to treat an egg allergy, it’s not always an easy task as egg is often a hidden ingredient in many foods like salad dressings and canned soups.

“The stakes are high,” the ACAAI noted. Because of this, it’s important for people with an egg allergy to be vigilant when checking food labels.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction when consuming these products,” the company noted.

According to the statement, the problem was discovered after a customer submitted a “sick note”.

The affected Zerto Fontal cheese products have the code 20565300000 and the best before date from September 21, 2022 to October 20, 2022 21 to 29.

The cheeses were packaged “slice by slice” and would have been found in the specialty section, the announcement said. A photo of what the label may have looked like is available on the FDA website.

“All affected products have been removed from store shelves,” the announcement said. “Customers who purchased this product from Whole Foods Market can bring a valid receipt to the stores for a full refund.”

Those who have questions about the recall can contact the company at 1-844-936-8255.
