Akshay Thakrar is the latest hopeful to be sacked from The Apprentice as the enterprising candidates were tasked with selling the most products in a teleshopping program on Thursday night.

The sixteenth series of the reality show, directed by Lord Alan Sugar, followed a new group of contestants all keen to prove their skills to claim his mentorship and the £250,000 investment in their business.

In the ninth week of the BBC programme, Lord Sugar summoned the remaining candidates to Greenwich Market in south-east London.

Sugar told the contestants, “In any market around the world, the key is selling to get the best price for your products.”

The teams learned they would be selling live to the nation in a prime-time slot on one of the country’s leading TV shopping channels, with the group that achieved the most sales winning in the boardroom.

Akshay, 28, owner of the digital marketing agency, was the Diverse team’s project manager for the challenge and spoke about his sales experience, but when push came to shove, the group was plagued by poor product selection and disruptions during the live show.

At the start of the challenge, Akshay said to the cameras, “This is more than a task. This is about me. This is about pride. This is about proving myself. I have to show up for this task and give something big.”

While both teams battled it out on air, the Diverse trio was left behind after failing to charm the head buyer, missing out on a quality star item that the other team snatched up instead.

Then, while on the air, teammates Kathryn Louise Burn and Stephanie Affleck struggled with nerves as they dealt with Akshay talking excessively into their gallery earphones.

In the boardroom, Karren Brady revealed the Diverse team had made over £400 less in revenue from products than their rivals, putting all three at risk of being eliminated.

When it came down to it, Lord Sugar Akshay laid the failure of the task at his feet and the Londoner stared down with the infamous index finger when he was told he was fired.

Akshay is said to have been a director of several dissolved companies

Akshay owns digital marketing agency Sai Network, which according to its website is “a performance marketing agency focused on attracting new clients.”

“My friends call me AK47 because I’m a great salesman,” he said after joining The Apprentice, before claiming he could sell anyone anything.

The apprentice hopeful has previously responded to claims that he was a director of several defunct companies before joining the BBC business competition.

He said in a statement: “These companies were simply registered when I was younger.”
