Russia: Lorraine says military action is ‘scary’

Lorraine Kelly did not hold back when discussing Vladimir Putin’s appearance on live TV.

The broadcaster, 62, was a guest on the late-night comedy show The Last Leg on Friday night, when the Russian leader struck up a conversation.

Given the format of the Channel 4 series that revolves around politics and current affairs, the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces will clearly be a prominent feature throughout the show.

Speaking on the show, Lorraine told Putin, 69, a ‘strange, weird, well-spoken person’ and appreciated the politician’s appearance.

The Last Leg kicks off a new series on Friday night, with the Scots star joining guests Richard Ayoade and hosts Josh Widdicombe, Adam Hills and Alex Brooker in the studio to discuss the new week.

Sharing his thoughts on the Russian president, the daytime host didn’t hold back any punches.

“How will the third World War play out for you?” Adam asked the presenter during the show.

“Oh my god. We just came out of the darkness of Covid into the light and then, wham,” Lorraine replied.

“I wonder what’s going on with this weird, weird, fascinating person, Putin.”

The ITV star went on to ask, “What’s going on?”

“You have to ask yourself, what is the end game here?”

Turning to comedian Josh, Lorraine asked: “Have you been worried about [Putin] not angry, you can not say.

“You can’t say anything to him because he’s done so much – supposedly – his face is weird.

“It looks like a candle has melted, and then hardened,” she added savagely.

Lorraine continued, comparing the Russian leader to the House of Wax character Vincent Price, saying: “He had a face like that, then someone beat him up and there was a terrible monster underneath him. .”

Joking with the star, host Alex quipped: “It’s very rare for someone to say you’re too young to remember something, isn’t it?”

Lorraine replied: “You’re just a kid, it’s like something out of Game of Thrones.

“I don’t understand why this is happening, I feel like I’m living the worst dream.”

Returning to the star’s earlier comments, Josh joked: “I like the way you say ‘alleged’ because you’re worried Vladimir Putin will take time out of the fight to sue you.”

“Obviously he has, nobody has that face, I don’t think he was born with that little face,” Lorraine explained.

Earlier this week, TV viewers were shocked after Lorraine’s ‘awkward’ alignment between segments on her ITV show.

The ITV host kicked off the show on Thursday with a startling update on the unfolding world crisis, after Russian President Putin oversaw military strikes in Ukraine.

At the end of the Ukraine segment, the mother of one said to her reporter: “Thanks, be safe. It’s David and Goliath and we just hope Goliath doesn’t win this time.”

The TV star then quickly continued, telling viewers, “Yes, life goes on and she’s the original pop-punk princess. She’s sold over forty million albums. Avril Lavigne is back with brand new music.”

Many people took to Twitter to protest the move to a new segment, with some calling the presenter’s comment ‘insensitive’.

* The Last Leg airs every Friday from 10pm on Channel 4.
