When we chatted with Lorraine Kelly, she was hiding in her husband Steve’s “small room” upstairs in their London home so she could have some peace and quiet.
“We have a full house because Rosie is here with her little boyfriend and her dog Ruby. So I’m in the male cave,” she explained.
Lorraine is with us to talk about her work as an ambassador for WW, formerly known as Weight Watchers. The presenter started working with the company after going two sizes up during the pandemic – from a size 10 to a size 14 – and she told us that the brand’s personalized app, helps good for your mental and physical health as well as your diet, really appeals to her.
“I did Weight Watchers decades ago and it really worked for me,” she says. “But we continued [since then] and it’s not about weight – that has to be taken out of the equation. It’s about the whole body.”
Anyone who has watched Lorraine’s ITV show won’t be surprised to learn that she makes us laugh several times in conversation with her dry sense of humour. At one point she even stood up, turned around and glued her ass to the camera to show us.
it is (for the record, it’s really not that big).
There was also a funny moment when the presenter tried to accept an alert on her phone (which turned out to be a news bulletin) and our poor connection meant we could only heard the end of her sentence as she said the word “Boris Johnson”. When we jokingly asked if the Prime Minister was trying to call her, Lorraine, who was very strict in his criticism of him, raised an eyebrow and said, “I’m sure I could be one of the last. call with him. ”
We chat with the 62-year-old about eating too many donuts, why she doesn’t weigh herself, and how she loves nothing more than hanging out with her 30-year-old husband, Steve Smith, and their 27-year-old daughter. their Rosie age. …
Hello, Lorraine! Tell us why you want to improve…
During the pandemic, I started eating comfort food and that was my downfall – eating comfort food and not being able to go to my fitness classes. When those classes stopped, I started to overeat – those are things I would probably never have bothered with. Like I want muffins, I want croissants, I want donuts. All these things that you know you shouldn’t have and you think it makes you feel better at the time but it doesn’t. And so slowly, slowly, slowly over the past few years, I’ve gone from a size 10 to a size 14…
You look amazing to us…
Everyone says, “But you look good!” and, yes, I look good – but I don’t feel great. I definitely don’t have a lot of energy, because the more you do, the more energy you have and the classes really gave me that. So I need a little help. And that’s what WW gave me. It’s now updated because it’s all on the app. It’s easy and it’s all right for you. You don’t even have to weigh yourself if you don’t want to.
Do you have your own measurements?
I go by dress size. I have a red dress that I want to wear again.
When did you realize you went up two dress sizes? You look no different…
If you look at me, you can tell because I’m wearing different things. And I can show you the labels! I’m a size 14, definitely. I want to wear my favorite red dress when I go to a big ITV event. I thought, “Oh, I’ll try this.” No chance! It’s not even that it’s unbuttoned, it doesn’t even go over my thighs. Before the pandemic, I was in on that and I would feel good. So I ended up wearing a black stretchy dress and I looked perfectly fine, but I didn’t feel good. I also got a chance to talk to the guys from The Wanted on my show and I unbuttoned my shirt during the interview. I almost took one of their eyes out. It was hilarious and I’m not exposing myself or anything like that – those poor young men! But I thought, “I need to catch up.”
You look so slim in your Instagram photos…
That’s just the angle of the camera. Wait, let me stand up. Look at the size of my butt – can you see it?
It’s so perfect!
It really, really, really doesn’t. I also have a belly but it will go away.
Has food been in the spotlight for you during the pandemic?
Yes – although I am fortunate to still go to work every day, all of our habits are a bit off. Looking back on the past two years, it’s like a big blip because we didn’t have weddings or big things during the year. I come home from work and walk the dog outside for an hour but I don’t have any fitness classes. I don’t cook at all because I’m a trash cook but my husband is great. But he will cook complex and multi-part rendang curries. And then sweat at night. It is just comfortable eating, comfortable eating, comfortable eating.
Have you skipped over the delicious curries now?
Every woman who has been on a diet knows that diets don’t work. You won’t eat cabbage for the rest of your life! It’s ridiculous. I love curries, they are my favorites. But what I do now is I use the recipes in the WW app. You just cook them in a different way or you use different things. So it’s just minor tweaks. But for me, the most important thing is not how much space you are taking up in the world. It’s not about how much you weigh. It’s about how you feel. Over the past two years, I have
a few times when I wake up and think, “Oh my gosh, it’s all a bit too much”. So it’s also about mindfulness. It’s not about conforming to anyone else’s idea of what’s beautiful, but about conforming to how you feel.
Do you find it difficult to watch TV every day during the lockdown and can’t take your eyes off the news?
Well, that’s part of the job but at the beginning I said, “Look, there needs to be some light here. All cannot be darkness.” And then we see things like the late Captain, Sir Tom, God bless him. And all these kids are doing these amazing things. And the NHS – everyone suddenly knew how great it was. I mean, we all know how awesome they are, but people really realize it. So that’s a bit of a light. But yeah, you’re right, I can’t turn it off. That’s where you need to cut yourself a little slack right now and think about happiness, because I’m a lot like, “Soldier on!”
How do you relax?
My happy place is a real weekend at home. I love having Rosie and her lovely boyfriend James and her little dog Ruby. I walk the dogs and obviously if we were in Scotland we would be able to go see football. During the pandemic, I don’t miss out on going out a lot, but I do remember people turning around and laughing. You can laugh on Zoom, but it’s not quite like when they’re there and you’re holding them while laughing.
