LotRO wants to discuss monster play as it begins to chart its vision for the future of the feature

For monster players in The Lord of the Rings OnlineTo say it was an easy life would be…well, wouldn’t it. Player vs Monster Player, or LotROs version of PvP, has felt stagnant for years, with issues ranging from a perceived lack of support to outright performance issues. The LotRO team wants to start addressing this.

Written by Lead Systems Designer Orion, the forum post addresses some of the things that have made PvMP lacking of late, and begins right away by acknowledging that the stagnant Ettenmoors hasn’t seen “a noticeable change in structure, gameplay, or flavor” in years.

“First, let’s acknowledge that the Ettenmoors hasn’t seen a significant change in structure, gameplay, or flavor in a long time – years. This leads to stagnation and a deteriorating player base. The numerous iterative tweaks, balance passes and tweaks have been less bold than requested and seem to placate the die-hard fanbase that’s still here.”

Orion has only recently returned to the LotRO Team, having worked elsewhere for the past nine years, their approach to the Ettenmoors problem seems in good hands thanks to the fresh perspective they can bring. As a result, the developer is proposing some changes to the community, despite the cynicism and caution that Orion acknowledges crept into the community over the years.

While he’s not openly promising anything concrete or even big sweeping changes overall, the developer is instead talking about smaller adjustments that could build up and have an impact. Declaring that Monster Play is “at a crossroads,” Orion is proposing changes based on the team’s observations, player feedback gathered, and more.

Some of these changes include moving the Orc and Elf camps back to their original locations, changes to Frór prospecting, adjustments to the number of NPCs in the castles and keep towers that characterize the Moors, and adjustments to how healing works in the Ettenmoors just to dash through combat encounters.

Orion concludes by stating that the proposed changes, or even the restoration of the Ettenmoors to their former glory, will not be easy, quick, or painless. The team also recognizes that the changes need to be transparent and are working with players to include feedback to bring the Moors back to a place where freeps and creeps can once again enjoy ganking each other.
