Louis van Gaal has an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has announced that he is suffering from an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

The 70-year-old former Manchester United and Barcelona manager revealed his diagnosis on Dutch TV show Humberto but said he plans to continue in his role.

“During my time as coach of the national team, I always had to go to the hospital at night without the players finding out until now. I thought I was healthy, but I’m not,” he said.

“You don’t die from prostate cancer, at least not 90 percent of the time. Most of the time it’s other underlying diseases that kill you. But I was in pretty aggressive form, had 25 treatments. Then you have a lot to do to get through life.

“I received preferential treatment at the hospital. I was let in through the back door at an appointment and immediately moved to another room. I was treated wonderfully.”

In his third spell as Netherlands coach, Van Gaal has led his country to the World Cup in Qatar, where they will meet hosts Senegal and Ecuador in the group stage later this year.

His management career spans almost four decades. Van Gaal has won league titles with Barcelona, Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich and AZ Alkmaar.

He spent two seasons at Manchester United and led the club to an FA Cup triumph in 2016 before being sacked days later.
