This summer, I surprised myself with my return to lip gloss. I like the lightness and low maintenance factor of wearing something transparent. However, now that the temperature has (finally) dropped, I find myself reaching for my matte lipsticks. There’s something about the boldness in its opacity that makes me feel dressed and ready for winter.
What he says about matte lipstick is that it’s not the easiest formula to wear. In fact, in some cases, it’s a nightmare. It can be drying, irritating, and difficult to maintain as it clings to any dry skin on the lips. “But are you still wearing it?” I heard you ask. I do. I cannot help myself. Here are some tips and tricks to make it work.
First, choose wisely. Matte lipsticks have generally improved in terms of comfort, but some are still better than others. I often find liquid formulas easy to apply with precision for my pale lips. They are highly pigmented and apply evenly, then dry completely to form a matte finish.
(1) Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipstick (€21.95 past boot.ie) was one of the OGs and still one of the most laid back, in my experience. The formula is lightweight and feels like you’re wearing nothing at all.
(2) NYX Professional Makeup Soft Matte Lip Balm (€8 past start up.ie) is a cult favorite for a reason. The price is undisputed, and it offers perfect comfort and color.
If you like a classic bullet of lipstick, (3) Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick (€40.68 past Cultbeauty.com) recipe is great. This really feels like you’re wearing nothing on your lips without affecting the color. The first time I tried it, my mind was blown, as it felt completely different from any matte lipstick I’ve tried before.
(4) Lisa Eldridge’s True Velvet Lip Color line (€32 through lisaeldridge.com) are very similar, although I must say that I prefer their gold packaging for the significantly more luxurious feel than Pat McGrath’s.
(5) Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Formula (€32 through brownthomas.com) is like the matte lipsticks of the old days, but still quite comfortable, and of course includes today’s iconic Pillow Talk color.
(6) L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Addiction (€11.99 last start up.ie) is another solid choice. The lipsticks don’t dry into a completely matte finish, but they’re comfortable to wear and give a decent color.
When it comes to practical application, start by exfoliating the lips. As I mentioned earlier, matte products tend to stick to dry patches, so you’ll have a much nicer base if you get rid of dry skin in the first place.
You can do this with an exfoliating product like (7) Milani Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (€12.50 past start up.ie), but a toothbrush or washcloth will also work.
When it comes to products, less is more. A thin layer will wear better. If you’re having trouble with precision, a lip brush can help you apply the least amount of product and still deliver a glossy, eye-catching finish.
Lost in translation
We all learned about chlorophyll in school about its role in photosynthesis, but today it pops up frequently in conversations about skin care. Celebrities interested in ‘clean’ or ‘natural’ beauty love this ingredient thanks to it being plant-based and some studies showing its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to be effective when applied topically. in place. Chlorophyll is rich in Vitamins A, C, E and K which are all very good for your skin, but I think including it in your diet is the best way to get the best effect by eat more vegetables.
Medik8 is a brand I’ve always looked up to for products that work, but don’t go bankrupt. The brand was created by Elliot Isaacs, who created the first product in a small lab in the back of his father’s pharmacy in 2004.
liquid peptidess (€64 qua spacenk.com) is a moisturizing and non-sticky serum that penetrates the skin wonderfully. This peptide blend (a chain of amino acids) is specially formulated to penetrate deep into the lower layers of the skin. Once there, it can aid in collagen production, thus plumping the skin, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, and increasing skin firmness. Expect to see immediate results in softness and hydration, while increased firmness may take some time.
… What’s new?
French skin care brand Biologique Recherche known for their incredible and super effective facial care formulas. The brand’s products are ‘prescribed’ to the individual by skin experts after assessing their specific skin needs, which means you won’t walk into a store and buy them off the shelf.
This is not a brand that launches new products, so when something new comes out, that’s a big deal. Collagene Originel Redensifying Face Serum (from €62 through skinbyolga.ie) aims to plump the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles through increasing collagen production. In my experience, Biologique Recherche products have always worked and I can’t wait to try this serum.
