Low-cost flights to New York, Washington DC and Boston go on sale after the launch of new transatlantic airline PLAY

LOW-cost flights to New York, Washington and Boston are slated to launch this summer following the launch of a new transatlantic low-cost carrier.

Launched in November 2019, Icelandic airline PLAY will offer one-way flights to the US for just under €255 each way.

Passengers flying to America have a two-hour layover in Reykjavik before continuing their journey.

The airline, which operates four times a week in the summer, also offers flights to the Icelandic capital for just 75 euros each way.

PLAY’s first flight took off from Dublin today and landed in Reykjavik in just under three hours.

The airline currently operates five aircraft, with another scheduled to be added in the summer.

Birgir Jónsson, CEO of PLAY said: “It is so exciting to have started our activities in Dublin. The bond between Icelanders and Irish is so strong and you can feel it every time we meet.

“So today is a big day of celebration for us at PLAY to have arrived at our good friends in Dublin.

“We see a lot of potential for this route between Dublin and Iceland and of course for the flight of passengers between Dublin and North America.

“We are certain that our service will make travel more affordable, so passengers will spend more at their destinations and less on their flights, or as we always say at PLAY: Pay less, PLAY more!”

Dalton Philips, Chief Executive Officer of daa, which operates Dublin Airport, welcomed the new flight.

He said: “We welcome the maiden flight this morning from Dublin to Reykjavik. We are pleased to see that Dublin Airport will enjoy improved connectivity to and from Iceland with PLAY.

“The improved access to and from Reykjavik shows how attractive the tourist opportunities are at both ends of this attractive new route.”

Reykjavik is one of 180 destinations Dublin Airport will serve this year in partnership with 44 airlines worldwide.

It comes like Ryanair has launched a new seat sale for city breaks, with prices starting at €19.99.

But bargain hunters will have to “act fast” to grab a bargain as the offer ends at midnight on May 11th.


Passengers must travel between May 1st and June 30th to take advantage of the cheap flights.

The airline has also named Amsterdam, Budapest and Vienna among its top spots for a city trip.

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus has also launched a flash summer sale with flights from €22 – a confirmed a major price change in baggage fees.

Jetsetters can get up to 20 percent off European flights and up to 20 percent off checked baggage all summer long.

The offer is valid until midnight on May 3rd and is valid for travel between May 1st and August 31st.
