Lower Decks Season 3, Episode 2

At the start of “The Least Dangerous Game,” the four main characters of the show banded together to play an intricate Klingon-themed board game called “Bat’leths & bIHnuchs.” A sword is long, curved, multi-handled Klingon swords that periodically appear throughout “Trek”. “BIHnuch” is the Klingon word for coward. Cowardice, even ordinary Trekkies can now be the result of Klingon ethos; To die in battle prefers to live a long, peaceful life.

The four main characters of the “Under Deck”, to get to the spirit of the game, wear the Klingon fortification and drink from the Klingon chess. Their game comes with a video monitor on the table of Prime Minister Klingon Martok (JG Herztler), who lays out the rules of the game and berates the players when they fail. Trekkies collecting merchandise in 1993 would immediately recognize “Bat’leths & bIHnuchs” as a reference to the real world “Star Trek: The Next Generation Interactive VCR Board Game – A Klingon Challenge” launched Milton My Bradley. The game’s premise takes the player – each of them sort – into a nearly abandoned Enterprise-D when a Klingon bad guy named Kavok invades and takes over the ship.

Notably, the game comes with a 60-minute VHS tape that is meant to be played alongside the board game. Sometimes the tape will stop and Kavok will instruct the player to answer (the game has sticky comma badges that you can stick to your shirt), and then draw from a specific deck. Confusingly, Kavok is played by actor Robert O’Reilly, who has become better known as Gowron the Klingon character in “Next Generation”.

To acknowledge that historical confusion, Boimler (Jack Quaid) mentions his desire to get the Gowron Expansion.
