Lucasfilm EVP Lynwen Brennan Talks of Light and Magic, Challenges Facing VFX, Star Wars, etc. [Interview]

There’s been some talk lately among people working in the visual effects industry that maybe some of them don’t necessarily get the credit they deserve or the money they deserve when they have to. such fast and hard deadlines and such long hours. Since you oversee so much of this, what is your view on that growing opposition?

I think there’s no doubt that visual effects artists are incredibly talented, incredibly hard-working, and they don’t get the credit they deserve. Much of that comes from the fact that – I often say, in a way, I feel in this industry, because we think it’s a magic trick, that the geniuses behind the scenes are just make it a reality. And we don’t necessarily have to rely on individuals and the amount of hard work it takes. It is of the invisible type. So I think the more we can do – like we’re doing in a documentary like “Light & Magic”, which really celebrates people – to highlight the that individual, the work they put into it and the genius they have, I think the visual effects will get the recognition it deserves.

One last thing as we end here, what do you think is the biggest challenge a franchise like “Star Wars” faces as it enters a whole new era?

That is a great question. Something we always ask ourselves. I think the great thing about “Star Wars” is that it’s a huge galaxy with thousands upon thousands of years of history, so it’s a great place to explore. And figure out how we can explore those different parts, but in a way that’s connected, not overwhelming, and we don’t overdo it. Because I think “Star Wars” is special too. So we always want to make sure that, when we tell a story, it’s a story that needs to be told or people want to hear about it. I think that’s the most important thing, so that when we tell stories, they have some context and they have a reason to exist. Because there are so many of us maybe but I don’t think you want to do all you can do at once. You have to parse it out.
