Lucy Letby: A nurse accused of murdering babies wrote ‘I’m mad I did this’ in a note

A nurse accused of murdering seven babies in a neonatal unit wrote on a Post-it note police found at her home: “I killed her on purpose because I’m not good enough,” has heard a court.

Ucy Letby, 32, has denied murdering five boys and two girls at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016 and attempted to murder a further five boys and five girls. She is said to have tried to kill some of the babies more than once.

Concluding the indictment at Manchester Crown Court, Nick Johnson KC said “items of interest” were found following the arrest and police search of Letby’s home.

He said: “I have already told you that police have found a large quantity of hospital records relating to many of the children whose deaths and collapse you are now contemplating.

“They also found some other interesting items. There were some sticky notes with tightly written words, some of which included the names of some of her colleagues.

“Some of the notes had phrases like ‘why/how did this happen – what process led to this current situation.

“‘What allegations were made and by whom? Do you have written evidence to support your comments?’

“In her writings, she expressed frustration at not being allowed to return to the neonatal unit, writing, ‘I did nothing wrong and they have no evidence, so why did I have to go into hiding?’

“And the notes also expressed concern about the long-term effects of what she feared, and there are also many protestations of innocence.

“But I want to show you one note in particular.”

Highlighting a yellow sticky note shown on TV screens for the jury, Mr Johnson focused on some of the words Letby had written. Mr Johnson said: “She wrote: ‘I don’t deserve to live. I killed her on purpose because I’m not good enough. ‘I’m a terribly bad person’ and in capital letters ‘I AM EVIL, I HAVE THIS’.”

Mr Johnson added: “Well, ladies and gentlemen, that, in short, is your role in this case. Whether or not she did those horrific things is for you to decide when you hear all the evidence.”
