Lucy Mecklenburgh reveals son Roman’s diagnosis after health crisis

Lucy Mecklenburgh tried not to cry as she opened up to fans about her son Roman’s latest diagnosis.

The former The Only Way Is Essex star had to take the two-year-old to hospital last year after turning blue in his crib.

He was put on a ventilator in intensive care in what Lucy and his partner Ryan Thomas describe as “every parent’s worst nightmare”.

Since then, the kid has needed medication and an inhaler every day so that he can breathe properly.

The youngster has also been checked regularly to monitor his progress.

But Lucy revealed the family had received some shocking news during a hospital appointment on Friday.

Reality star and fitness guru Lucy – who is currently pregnant with her second child – said the diagnosis left her with “mixed feelings”.

The 30-year-old said on her Instagram Stories that doctors noticed that fluid entered Roman’s lungs when he drank.

The little one had to undergo a special “video fluoroscopy” – a moving X-ray taken while a patient is consuming fluids.

Lucy explained: “It was to check that when he drinks, no liquid goes the wrong way and into his lungs.

“I honestly thought it wasn’t going to show that, so I kept my day job and he went with Ryan.

“I love going to all appointments and Ryan called me and said it showed fluid getting into his lungs.”

Lucy choked back tears and continued, “I feel really weird about it because I’m sad for Roman.”

Doctors have said that from now on Roman needs to have a special thickening agent – that doesn’t get into his lungs – instead of thin liquids.

That treatment could be something that little Roman has been performing for “years” while experts try to find an alternative.

Lucy told her 1.7million Instagram followers: “From Monday when we pick up the thickener he won’t be able to have thin liquids for quite some time – possibly years.

“So no lollipops and ice cream, no regular water or juice. Everything has to be a really thick consistency so it doesn’t end up in his lungs.

“But we have an answer. Maybe it’s not the full picture. I don’t know yet because we haven’t seen his agent – but it’s something.”

She added: “It’s a step forward and something we can deal with and hopefully it will prevent him from getting sick like that.

“So yeah, it’s positive in a way because maybe we’re a little bit closer to the answer.”

Lucy is due to give birth to her second baby with her fiancé Ryan in the spring. Earlier this month, she shared a cute clip of Roman meeting his little sister on a 4D scan.
