Luis Diaz has only been in the UK for a few weeks, but he’s already looking at the business.
He made an immediate impact after being thrust into action in the Reds’ 2-0 win Inter Milan in the middle of the week before following that with a brilliant performance and a goal, in Win 3-1 on Saturday finish Norwich.
The fact that Diaz only took two matches to open Premier League the account is impressive – but it’s the way the Colombian wizard made his first Anfield attack that will get him exempt By Jurgen Klopp preferred strategy of attracting new recruits to life in Merseyside.
Klopp has shown a tendency to gradually introduce new signings to the team.
That stance was adopted with the summer contract Ibrahima Konatebut Diaz has made it clear he is ready to star for Liverpool right now.
And if Klopp can resist the urge to wrap his £37million new man in cotton wool, there’s every chance the former Porto star could become the trump card in the Reds’ sleeves when they bid to suck money City of Manchester to the title.
The style with which the 25-year-old swam across the pitch against the Canaries made Diaz seem detached from the well-oiled side of Liverpool for many years.
It was an extremely impressive performance – even if it came, so to speak, ahead of schedule.
It would be unreasonable for anyone to expect Diaz to make such a big impact for the Reds right after his big money transfer.
But now that he has, the plan has to be changed accordingly.
It’s very unlikely that any sort of team stretch spell is part of Klopp’s master plan for the long-legged attacker.
But the Red Devils need all the help they can get if they want to chase City in hopes of winning a second title in three years.
Liverpool’s power of depth made the difference during a challenging week.
Klopp’s swift changes helped stifle Inter’s momentum midweek last week as the Red Devils created a heated battle to keep their title hopes alive after Norwich silenced Anfield by preceded by a shock.
It’s unclear where Diaz will fit in when Jota and Firmino return to the starting lineup, but it will be a welcome headache for the Reds chief.
What was already clear was that Klopp needed to find a place for his new magician.
It would be a huge waste to leave Diaz on the bench after his great early-stage bump – even if that was the original plan.
Diaz has definitely been contracted for the future – a long-term project to take on the mantle from the likes Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah when it’s time for the current generation of Reds to pass the torch.
But he got up and shot ahead of time; Whether Liverpool like it or not, the future could be now.
